The end of it has been entirely lost, missing from the Codex Regius, but in a way - this makes the parts we do know even more enthralling. For once in a rare time in literary history, we have to envision the continuation and conclusion to the story of the powerful Valkyrie Brynhild, and the brave Sigurth, ourselves. Our hero Sigurth rides up on Hindarfjall, and there on the mountain he sees a great light, as if a fire were burning, with glow reaching all the way up to the heavens. Coming closer he sees a tower of shields, and above it: a banner. Sigurth goes into the “shield-tower”, and sees a man laying in there - sleeping amidst all his weapons of war. He takes the helm from the warriors head, and that’s when he sees that it is a woman. As he cuts of her mail-coat she awakes, sits up and looks at Sigurth, asking what woke her. Her name is Brynhild, she tells him, but she is called Sigrdrifa (The Sigr-bringer), and she is a Valkyrie. She tells Sigurth of these two kings that fought in battle; one was called Hjalmgunnar, an old man - but a mighty warrior, that Odin had promised victory. The other was Agnar, a man that “nobody would shield”. Brynhild would shield him though, and she slew Hjalmgunnar in the battle, making Odin so mad he punished her by pricking her with a sleep-thorn, and said that she should never thereafter win victory in battle, and that she would be forced to wed. But Brynhild had made a vow of her own turn, that she would “never marry a man who knew the meaning of fear”. Sigurth, who is fearless, replies by asking her to teach him wisdom, since she knows of all that takes place - in all nine worlds. Brynhild is charmed by the brave man, and tells Sigurth of magic spells. Runes to write, and where to write them. Runes for happiness, runes for the good birth of a child, runes for wealth, runes for good weather on the oceans, and runes for winning in battle. And up there on the mountain of Hindarfjall, Sigurth stands, sword in hand, helm on head, when this other head shows up as well. Quite literally, being as it is without a body: The head of Mimir, who was known for his knowledge, so much that after being decapitated in war, Odin took Mimir’s head with him, and it continued to recite secret words of wisdom to him, and give him council. Anyways, Mim’s head speaks, and the author says the head speaks the truth, when it asks Sigurth to write runes “On the paws of the bear, and on Bragi’s tongue. On the wolf’s claws bared, and the eagle’s beak. On bloody wings, and bridge’s end. On freeing hands, and helping footprints. We choose to believe that Sigurth pulls it off. To win in battle, and to win the hand of the Valkyrie. Where we leave you, at “I shall not flee, though my fate be near, I was born not a coward to be”, - that is also the last remaining stanza in this beautiful and complex work of poetry. We know there is eight pages of the Codex missing. So we can only make up our own versions of what we think the future of these two bring. Quite suitably, we think. Because this is the moment where we recommend you to step in, when you put the Sigr on your back for the first time. In the middle of making that big decision, not knowing what the future will bring. In front of you is just unwritten pages. A path not yet taken. What path to go down - is your own to choose, and what you will have to stand up against and overcome, is still unknown. But you do have the Sigr with you, foretold about for 1100 years - and sown in with magical runes from the Sigrbringer herself. For whatever comes… We trust you come prepared.
